Supervision

I will supervise research on the following themes in the following areas. Inquiries from the prospective students are most welcome.

  • Pragmatics: General pragmatics. Grice’s theory (implicature, maxims of conversation, etc.), Speech acts, politeness (Brown and Levinson, R. Lakoff, and Leech), deixis, Definition of pragmatics, border between pragmatics and semantics.
  • Discourse Analysis (DA): Approach to discourse analysis (how to collect and analyze discourse data), Theoretical concepts needed to analyze discourse (turns, floors, adjacency pairs, preference organization, discourse markers, fillers, hedges, pauses, etc.)
    Analysis of everyday conversations, Analysis of classroom discourse, Analysis of business settings. Youth language. Critical Discourse Analysis/Studies.

    Analysis of varieties caused from social factors (ethnicity, gender difference, age, generation, situation (formal vs. informal), social roles).

  • Historical Pragmatics: Grammaticalization or constructionalization of discourse markers/pragmatic factors. Rise of discourse markers. Semantic/functional change of discourse markers/pragmatic items. Subjectification/intersubjectification.
  • Sociolinguistics: Themes related to the social factors such as ethnicity, gender difference, age, generation, situation (formal vs. informal), social roles. Registers, diglossia, etc. Inquiries will be welcome.
