Summary of the IE Listening Program Survey Results

In the 2005 academic year, two surveys were administered to assess the "listening needs" of students in the IE Program. This was a follow-up to a needs analysis of students enrolled in IE Listening Sections conducted five years ago, in the year 2000.

In last year's follow-up study, two online questionnaires were given during IE Listening classes. You kindly participated in one or both of them. The first one was an open-ended survey meant to determine the categories that would be worth including in a second, more focused, closed-response survey. In the results summarized below, you can see the basic demographic data and characteristics of student respondents in items one through five (age, sex, current IE level, level at which student began, and whether or not the student studied abroad for a year or more).

The data from items 6-8 wasn't included in the chart below because doing so might have compromised students' right to privacy, but a general summary of them is...

Although there turned out to be varying interest in documentaries, a larger percentage of students were more negative about them than about any other category of content (28% weren't interested in them or weren't AT ALL interested in them). Looking through the current IE Listening texts, we see that approximately half of the non-musical IE I and II units feature documentaries, and 9 out of 14 units in IE III offer clips from documentaries. There is relatively more interest in current events and MUCH greater interest in movies (with 96% of students interested or interested very much), pop songs (89%), and TV dramas (88%). So we are clearly going to have to reconsider the balance of materials we've been including in the program. We would like to provide students with materials that will maximize their interest and, hence, motivation.

It's rather disappointing that larger percentages of students did not feel confident in accomplishing the items on the list in Ques. #12. The only one for which a majority of students expressed confidence was in "giving directions to foreigners on the street." We hope to make improvements to the Listening Section, and in the other parts of the IE Program, so that more students will be able to confidently express themselves and comprehend English.

The fact that the majority of students (62.3%) felt that IE Listening was "helpful" or "very helpful" shows that we are not totally off track, but there is much more that we can do to improve the program and your valuable feedback has helped us. From last year, songs and news materials were added. Some teachers have begun to require that students keep "listening journals" and report on outside-of-class exposure to audiovisual content of their choice. The Media Library helped us to make a number of units of the IE Listening texts accessible through the LAN for online self-study. We are now looking into making materials available for portable MP3/video devices, such as the iPod. We feel that online learning and the use of mobile devices for listening practice might be important in meeting the valid concern by 36.5% of respondents who felt that one of the problems with IE Listening was "insufficient class time to listen to English."

Thank you again for your participation in this research and I wish you a joyful summer holiday!

Sincerely,
Joseph Dias
IE Program Coordinator
