講演題目: Shakespeare, Sex and Punishment

Martin Ingram’s research in early modern social history examines the frequent and often unpleasant encounters that common people had with English church and secular authorities that sought to control personal morality during this period. His pioneering work on the regulation of sex and marriage by a stern ecclesiastical justice system has influenced scholars across a range of interests. Ingram’s influence is particularly strong among literary critics who have crossed the border from the literary text to examine the immediate and fascinating social histories that inform these texts.

Dr. Ingram’s latest monograph, Carnal Knowledge: Regulating Sex in England, 1470-1600 is due out from the Cambridge University Press in early 2017. This book charts continuities, changes and transformations in the scope and intensity of sexual regulation in England before, during and after the Reformation, looking at secular as well as ecclesiastical courts. There are separate sections on rural areas, larger provincial towns, Westminster, Southwark and the London suburbs, and the city of London itself.

Ingram is also currently working on another book on much the same theme but focused on London from the 1590s to the 1630s, provisionally entitled "The ABC of Sex in Shakespearean London." Preliminary versions of two of the later chapters of this monograph (respectively on bastardy and cohabitation) are available in Rebecca Probert (ed.), Cohabitation and Non-marital Births in England and Wales, 1600-2012 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).
