講演題目: The Power of the Underground in African American Culture: Five Examples

講演内容:
The concept of the underground manifests itself in multiple ways within African American culture. This lecture examines five interconnected examples of how (and where) the concept of the underground presents itself in Black life, literature, social movements, music, and the arts. The first example, the Underground Railroad, a socio-political movement, framed by music and literature, represents a defining moment in the formation of the United States. The Underground Railroad was the resistance movement that defined the concept of liberty for Americans in the 19th century. Successive iterations of the concept emerge through various moments in African American literature – Richard Wright’s The Man Who Lived Underground, Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, and Amiri Baraka’s classic Black Arts play, Dutchman. Ultimately, the conceptual power of the underground can be located within the earliest developments of Hip Hop culture where the contestation over space, the challenges of racial and artistic authenticity, and the dominance of market forces all collide in the elements of contemporary black urban youth culture.
