講演題目: Using Measurement to Inform L2 Research

Measures of second language (L2) learning and related factors are fundamental to research in diverse second language acquisition (SLA) domains, and some of them have been subjected to initial scrutiny for qualities such as reliability, construct validity, and interpretive challenges. However, efforts to date have been based on restricted understandings of the relationship between measurement methods and practices. This lecture explores the heuristic of intended uses for measurement as a foundation for both theoretical and practical interpretations. At stake is the fundamental question of how to evaluate the evidentiary logic and operationalization that underpin current uses of measurement in SLA, such that interpretations being made by researchers and other communities are warranted. This lecture will explore distinct approaches to measurement in the service of SLA research from diverse domains, with a focus on critiquing and improving current practice.

John Norris (Ph.D., University of Hawai‘i) is a professor in the Georgetown University Linguistics Department and affiliate graduate faculty in the University of Hawai‘i Department of Second Language Studies. His primary research and teaching interests focus on language assessment, program evaluation, research methods, and task-based language teaching.
