 「鉄条網の中の俳句 ――ハートマウンテン・キャンプを例として」

講演要旨
Of the 120,000 Japanese Americans who were placed in so-called internment camps during World War II, about 10,000 were sent to Heart Mountain, Wyoming. Among the many activities that were organized in the camp was a haiku composition group. The members of the group no doubt saw in haiku both a way to connect with their native land, and also to cope with their experience of confinement. This lecture will examine one aspect of the Japanese American experience in terms of a canonical poetic mode as it relates to questions of native language and identity.
